Botulinum Toxin is a neurotoxin that works by relaxing the facial nerves that cause the muscles in the face to contract, thus smoothing wrinkles from forming.
Botulinum Toxin can also be used to treat excessive sweating under the arms, hands and feet (hyperhydrosis). It is also used for treating headaches especially those caused by grinding, Tempero- Mandibular Joint disorders and temporal headaches.
Common facial areas where Botulinum Toxin can be used:
- Frown lines or glabellar lines
- Crows feet or wrinkles around the eyes
- Horizontal creases in the forehead
- Lines at the corners of the mouth
- “Cobblestone” skin or puckering of the chin
- Gummy smile
- Bruxism
Use of Botulinum Toxin should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding
Most common side effects include mild pain, swelling or bruising around the injection site.
How it works:
Anti-wrinkle injections target muscles that contract and allow them to relax temporarily while creating a visible smoothening of lines/wrinkles created by a contraction of these muscles.
People who use a lot of facial expression when conversing tend to develop lines around the eyes called Crows Feet. This also occurs with aging. Anti-wrinkle injections work amazingly for these lines as they give a smooth effect at rest, but you will still have fine; natural and softer dynamic lines.
The glabella or frown is the main indication for anti-wrinkle injections. Removing the frown, creates a more approachable, relaxed look versus an ‘angry’ look which most people are not aware of.
